It's a board meeting Monday and the boss wants to give the staff new updates that are going on with the company. Â
As everyone comes into the meeting with notebooks and pens in their hands to write down the new information that the boss will tell them today.Â
Good morning, I have great news. As everyone settles in their seats around the boardroom table listening. The boss begins her Spiel.Â
We are opening up a new Insurance office in Westville. I will be sending 2 of my best employees to move there and set up the whole operation for 6 months. All of the employees are looking around wondering who she has chosen. The company is growing and we need more space. Eventually we will all move out there but for now Henry and Brain, I need both of you to go to Westville. I will give you the address of the office. Each of you will need to go and find your own apartment there. You can both go there to look for one tomorrow. The employees clapped and congratulated them.
Meet Henry:Â Â
He is optimistic. He always sees the good in a situation. Heâs the glass half full kind of guy. When it rains outside people come into the office complaining about the rain slowing down traffic and getting wet. Henry comes in with a smile asking everyone did you see the rainbow in the sky after the rain? I finally got a chance to wear my new rain coat and rain boots.Â
So the next day Henry drives to Westville and stops at the realtors office. He sits down in the reception area. The receptionist calls for Mary the realtor to let her know that Henry is here. She will be right with you, said the receptionist. Please have a seat. So, Henry smiles at the receptionist and sits down and waits for Mary to come out and greet him.
Mary comes out of her office and with a bright smile, she says, Hello Henry.
Henry says, hello.Â
I hear you are relocating to Westville for 6 months.Â
Yes I am, says Henry, I live in a very friendly town right now. People look out for each other. They will pull back your garbage from the street if they get home before you. They will get their kids to shovel the snow from in front of your door down to the sidewalk. They say hello when they see you. Iâm looking for a town like that to live in.Â
Is Westville like that?
Yes, said Mary. It's exactly like that here in Westville. The same type of people you live around now will be the same type of people here. Come into my office and let me show you some houses that I picked out for you. Henry gets up and follows Mary to her office. As he walks by the receptionist he smiles at her and thanks her for her help.
Now,
Meet Brian:
You canât make Brian happy no matter how hard you try. Heâs the glass half empty kind of guy. Heâs the guy that comes in from the rain and complains about how wet his pants are from stepping in the puddles outside the office building. Brian is the guy that goes into the meetings on the first day of the week complaining about another, Monday board meeting.Â
Can you believe the boss chose me with all of these other people here in this meeting to go to Westville? I have to uproot my life for 6 months. Ugh!
The next day Brian goes to the real estate office to meet Mary the realtor to find him a place in Westville.
Hello Iâm Brian, Iâm here to see Mary.Â
Oh hello, sure the receptionist calls Mary. Please have a seat. Mary will be right out.
Hello, Brian says Mary with her big beautiful smile. How can I help you today?
Hello, Iâm here to find a place to live for the next 6 months. Right now where I live is a place where the neighbors are not friendly. They donât speak when they see you. I worry about safety all of the time.
One time I went outside to take the garbage out and someone stole my garbage can. The neighborâs dog barks early in the morning and late at night. I canât get a good night's sleep.
Is Westville like the town I hate living in now?
Yes, Mary said, Iâm sorry the same people you live around now are the same people that are here in Westville.Â
Please come into my office and let me show you some houses I picked out for you.
Brian gets up grudgingly and follows Mary to her office.
The receptionist smiles at Brian as he follows Mary to her office. Brian just looked straight ahead as if Mary wasnât even there.
Both men went back to the office the next week.
 Itâs  Monday board meeting day.Â
Henry came in first with a smile on his face and told everyone in the Monday board meeting day what a nice place Westville is to live.
The people there are very friendly there. His coworkers were happy with his report. This was a good pick he told their boss at the meeting. You will get a lot of business there.
Then Brian rushes into the board room to the Monday board meeting day.Â
Just missing Henryâs report of Westville.
The boss said, Brian, Henry has just given us his report on him finding a place in Westville and how he found the people in the town.
How did you find it?
 Oh, it was terrible there.
You really should reconsider Westville. I saw some places there and people were not very friendly there. No one spoke to me. I saw security bars across neighbors windows. I saw 3 and 4 locks on the door. Itâs not safe there.
Are you sure you were in Westville? said Henry.
Yes, said Brian.
That was not my experience there, said Henry.
Well, said the boss, Henry, you can go to Westville and Brian since we all will be going to Westville in 6 months that should give you enough time to find a job here in town.Â
Brian was in shock! This is the 3rd job he has lost in the last 3 years. Brian just sat back into his chair. Looking upset and like he was just treated unfairly.
Good job Henry. We will be looking forward to joining you in Westville in 6 months. You have a big job ahead of you so thatâs why I will be giving you a bonus and increase in your paycheck and moving expenses
Brian looked surprised and very unhappy.
The people in the meeting clapped for Henry and started whispering and looking at Brian.
Back at the Real estate office Mary the realtor came out of her office to the reception area. The receptionist was really curious and couldnât help but ask Mary,
Ah, Mary, can I ask you a question?
Sure, whatâs up?
Well, I happen to notice that when Henry came in the other day to find a place to live here in Westville he told you that he came from friendly neighbors and a safe area. Just like where he lives now.
And you told him the same type of people where he lives now will be the same type of people he will find here.
Then Brian came in and he said, his neighbors werenât friendly and the area he lives in now is not safe.
And you told him the same type of people where he lives now will be the same type of people he will find here.
I donât understand. Why did you tell Henry the same people where he lives now will be the same people he will find here. Nice and friendly.
Then you told Brian, the same people where he lives now will be the same people he will find here. Not nice and not friendly.
Then Mary replied, to the receptionist, What you look for is what you will find. If you look for the negative in everything. Then that's what you will find. If you look for the positive then thatâs what youâll find.
Some people will always find the negative no matter what. Thereâs nothing you can do to get them to see differently. It doesnât make sense to try to change them but, just accept them as they are and move on with or without them.
Later, Brian went up to Henry and asked him, why do you always see the positive in everything?"
Even when itâs not positive.
Henry said, My mother always saw the positive and taught us to be that way. She always read these scriptures to me and my sister.
 đšPsalm 118:24:
"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." She would explain to us that this verse encourages us to find joy in each day and to appreciate the present moment, encouraging us to have a positive attitude.
God gave you today, itâs a gift. Because He made it, you can choose to be happy and thankful no matter whatâs going on.
Every sunrise is a reminder that God is in control, and every day is a fresh chance to see His goodness. Even if life isnât perfect, we can still find reasons to rejoice because Godâs love and presence doesnât change.
Itâs an invitation to focus on the blessings of right now instead of worrying about yesterday or tomorrow.
and,
đš1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:
"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." These verses encourages a mindset of joy, prayer, and gratitude, all of which contribute to a positive outlook
Always find joy, not because life is perfect, but because God is good.
Keep talking to God, like an ongoing conversation throughout your day.
Be thankful no matter what, even in hard times, thereâs always something to thank Him for.
Living this way helps keep your heart light and your mind positive. Joy, prayer, and gratitude work together to keep you close to God and give you peace, no matter whatâs going on around you.
So, what I look for is what I find even in a negative situation.Â
Always remember this story my mom told me Brian:
There were 2 men that were in jail. One night after the rain had stopped they both looked outside of their window.
The first man looked down at the mud on the ground. He said, look at the mud on the ground.
Then the second man looked up and saw the stars in the sky and said, look at the stars in the sky.
Both men had the same view and told the truth based on what they chose to look at.
This story helps me find hope even in difficult circumstances.
When you change the way you look at things. The things you look at will change.
Brian nodded his head seeing Henryâs point of view. Then Brian walked away with a âdeep thoughtâ look on his face. Maybe I have been looking at life through the wrong lens, he mumbles to himself. đ¤
